Part 1 Development 3 Week Skill Gap Challenge

So for the Challenge I have to work on my Games Development skills, considering I have made a fair share of Unity games I wanted to really elevate my learning and get to the next level by learning C++ for Unreal.

Video series that was the most helpful to me:

Inspiration for Unreal Usage:

Key Goals Achieved This Week:

  1. Load up Unreal and try to get familiar with the software by playing around and importing models.
  2. Learnt Key Framework and Structure used within the Unreal Editor/Engine.
  3. Research Unreal Engine in particular Blueprints, any useful plugins or helpful ai code assistants and how they can be used to achieve my project.
  4. Achieve Version Control With GitHub.
  5. Finalise Key Game Design Idea & produce working Player Controller.
  6. Find Key Assets & Introduce first Workable/Playable Flashlight.
  7. Learn to use Key Testing/Debugging Features such as Breakpoints.

Bimboland Premise: Bimboland is the Anti-Barbieland Abandoned Creepy Fashion Doll Factory that's a new Entry in Mascot Horror games. The Idea comes from my Massive Collection + Passion for Fashion Dolls and my Realisation there was no Fashion Doll Factory Game only Baby Dolls.

The main slogan for it is You Can't Do Anything which is the opposite of Barbie's Trademark you can do anything.

My first idea for mechanics was to have the enemy follow the player when they turned the backat a certain pointwhich could possibly involve vectors to detect the angleof the player but I will probably need to simplify or change this to get something similar to allow the enemy to function correctly.

Things to do NEXT: Enemy Mechanics, Player Health, SFX, Level Environment Design, Flickering Lights, Fix C++ & Plugin Issues and CHALLENGE: Outfit Switcher for Enemy Doll by Switching Textures With Interactive Buttons.

IMPORTED MODELS

BLUEPRINTS

flashlight mechanic

Here is the finished product of my blueprints flashlight mechanic. IMPORTANT: Make sure to have the light as a child of the camera or it won't be visible.

I was told to use blueprints but I find it's actually harder than straight up C++ code so I tried to get some Ai's to help in this case they quite clearly failed as you can see below.

Copilot mistakes blueprints

This one was made with Copilot and it immediately offered this as an option but not helpful when it can't even understand basic colour coding.

ChatGPT blueprints mistakes

Another Example this time I used ChatGPT and again just not usable.

Reflection Summary: Overall this week I found really beneficial and learnt a lot in regards to the Unreal Framework + overall engine.

Next Target: My Main Aim Next is to Produce the Main Mechanics of the Game.
